396 picDesigned priginally as a commuter ferry for operation from Phillip Island to Stony Point, the fifteen metre vessel has fulfilled the operators need and is proving to have an economic advantage over other vessels. Described as "an aquatic bus" by Ron Devine, partner in the vessel’s Tasmanian builders Richardson and Devine Marine Constructions, the vessel was built for Inter Island Ferries to operate with a payload of 74 passengers.

"It’s a good little commuter ferry, exactly what its owners wanted and perfect for the commuter run from Phillip Island to link with the train from Melbourne." Ron said. "The boat performs really well and handled the delivery trip from Tasmania in three days, with the weather dictating a lot of that time." "The crew only had to turn the windscreen wipers on once, and that was in 25 knots of breeze."

396 picDesigned to be built to the requirements of Class 1D of Australia’s USL Code with a waterline length of 14.20 metres, beam of 5.30 metres and draft of 0.70 metres. A design feature is a wheelhouse raised above the level of the upper deck and descending into the forward area of the main deck, entry is from the main accommodation area. A small stairway provides easy access to the bridge.

Sixty-two commuters are accommodated on the fully enclosed main deck. They recline in comfortable Steamer Type chairs arranged in a 4x4 configuration each side of a central aisle, with additional rows of two seats to port and starboard of the lower section of the wheelhouse.

Additional seating is provided by anodised transverse benches on the upper deck reached by a sloped stairway from the aft main deck. Passengers board through gateways port and starboard from the aft main deck. Male and female toilets are positioned each side of the stairs.

Suggested power is a 200 horsepower main diesel and turning a four bladed propeller to deliver a maximum speed of 20 knots and cruise speed of 16 knots. The engines are fuelled by 1200 litres of diesel carried in twin 600 litre tanks, the fresh water tank capacity is 400 litres.

Essentially this fifteen metre ferry is an easy maintained, cost effective and reliable vessel, perfect for short range, moderate sea transportation. The vessel will satisfy operators with these goals in mind.
